For the Man Who Gave Me Everything

Updated: Dec 1, 2019

Today is my father's birthday, so it is only fitting that I make this post as a tribute to him. Every year, it becomes more and more difficult to get him a present, because I always feel that no gift could possibly be good enough for him.

It was my father who gave me my first taste of just how wonderful the world can be. After I graduated from high school, Dad took me on a trip to celebrate. He asked me where I wanted to go, and I told him I wanted to see the Grand Canyon. And before we left, I told him that I didn't want to travel a thousand miles (metaphorically, we flew) just to look at a hole in the ground. I wanted to experience the Grand Canyon. And an experience was what he gave me.

So the first thing we did was check into a circus-themed hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. But fear not, those of you with weak constitutions, he and I proved immune to the Sinful City's allures. Mainly because I was too young to gamble anyway, but I digress. On day one, we got breakfast in the hotel before heading out to the Canyon's west rim in order to walk on the Sky Walk, a glass walkway above the Canyon. You can look down and see the Canyon's floor beneath you. It was a surreal yet enjoyable experience.

On day two, we took a bus to the Hoover Dam. In mid-ride we saw some bighorn sheep. From atop the dam, we could see the Canyon once again as well as the history behind the dam. Once that was done, we explored the Vegas Strip and its many attractions, including a giant aquarium and the singing Bellagio Fountain that sprayed its many nozzles to the tune of God Bless the USA. That was great.

But the last day was really special. Dad wanted to make sure we ended our trip with a bang. So rather than simply look at the Canyon once again, we actually flew INTO the canyon in a helicopter and ate dinner inside it! I never would have thought something like this was even possible before it happened. It was wonderful.

I had no idea such wonders were out there at all until Dad introduced them to me. And now that I know, I strive for them every day. This world we live in is just awesome, and I want to see it all.

So I dedicate this post to you, my father. Happy birthday. And when you turn in for bed each night, know that everything you've done for me has made my life worth living. I love you, Dad.
